Our work in food service focuses on implementing local-level policies and activities that promote food service and nutrition guidelines and associated healthy food procurement in facilities, programs, or organizations where food is sold, served, or distributed.

The Overall Goals of the Food Service Guidelines Are To:

Increase purchasing and distribution of local foods.

Increase access to healthier foods.

Data shows that a more robust healthy food system improves health behaviors and outcomes, and reduces chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

Food Service Guideline Support Organizations & Resources

The following organizations work in alignment with the policies associated with food service guidelines.

  • Western Wayne County Food Policy Council

    WESTERN WAYNE FOOD POLICY COUNCIL

    They collaboratively shape the local food system and work to ensure that nutritious food is accessible for all. Their work is performed throughout the metropolitan Detroit area.

  • Metro Food Rescue

    METRO FOOD RESCUE

    It is their operating mission to rescue food that would be wasted and relocate it to individuals in need. Their goal is to bring fresh, delicious and nutritious items to their partners throughout Southeast Michigan. They work hard to ensure a reduction in food waste and food insecurity in Michigan as well as to educate communities and individuals on how to reduce food waste at home.

  • Maslow Consortium

    MASLOW CONSORTIUM

    A nonprofit organization focused on community development, health equity, and addressing systemic disparities. Key initiatives include addressing food insecurity, enhancing access to healthy food through innovative solutions like Smart Fridges and food trucks, and building strong community ties by partnering with faith-based organizations.

  • Corewell Health

    COREWELL HEALTH

    Corewell Health’s goal to be carbon neutral by 2040 represents a long-term investment in improving the local, regional and global environment and reflects the organization’s longstanding commitment to improving community health.

  • Detroit With Love

    DETROIT WITH LOVE

    An early-stage urban garden located in the Brightmoor neighborhood of Detroit that serves a community with unmet needs. Its mission is to address food insecurity by providing access to healthy, fresh produce while offering educational opportunities to promote sustainable food practices. This initiative aims to empower residents with the resources and knowledge needed to improve nutrition and overall community well-being.

  • Priority Health

    PRIORITY HEALTH

    The In Lieu of Services (ILOS) program is part of a broader Medicaid initiative in Michigan aimed at addressing health-related social needs by offering non-traditional services as substitutes for standard Medicaid benefits. 

  • City of Detroit Parks & Recreation Department

    CITY OF DETROIT PARKS & RECREATION

    They offer nutritious meals to children 18 and younger and adults with disabilities through their federal nutrition programs: the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). City recreation centers and host sites also offer educational, enrichment, and recreational activities throughout the year.
